"Rebuilt" Title
ORIGINAL: HAVOC
once again i get so tired of everyone thinking just because a bike is "rebuilt" or "salvaged" that means it is a bad bike ! there are many reasons a bike can be salvaged out and just because a title is clean doesnt mean **** ! only that the owner possibly never reported the accident to the insurance company
my friend has an 04 1krr that was flipped in a ditch 3 times and wrecked but the title is clean !
as with any bike car etc , regardless of title status check it out before buying ! ive gotten some sweet *** deals on salvaged vehicles that were given that title for stupid reasons .
if you like the bike check it out , dont judge it by its title alone

so again i apollogize if i came off as a jack *** (its been a really long day @ work)

No problem man. sounds like you're a little busy um ...talking to Red in the other thread anyway. Maybe you're a little distracted lol!
Hey, sounds like you know a little about the car sales business. In the off chance that you know a thing or two about bike prices, do you think $3,500 is a fair price for an '02 F4i with a rebuilt title and a few scratches? Also, can you give me an approximate percentageby which the price of a bike should be reduced because of a rebuilt title? How about salvage? I realize it depends on a lot of different factors (especially if it's salvage), but is there sort of a rule of thumb? Sorry if it's a bit annoying. I realize you've probably been talking cars all day (unless I'm mis-interpreting your last post). Thanks.

It sounds like you've gotten a pretty solid opinion, but I'll through my couple of cents in, too...
Mine has a rebuilt title... all it means, really, is that it has all brand new plastics! It was totalled because the cost of repairing the damages plastics was more than it was worth. I bought it back and since the insurance company had written it off, I had to re-register it as rebuilt. I ride it and love it even more because of it!

The last car I owned had a salvage title. It was a 1993 Celica with 88k miles on it, and I was the third owner. My friend/aquaintance (who I bought it from), bought it from a guy in Texas. Apparently it was in a flood and therefor the salvage title. It drove like a champ when I had it, but I sold it to my brother for $1000 when I got my work truck. Considering I bought it for $1500 and drove it for two years...I think I did pretty well.
my bike was a rebult title. It had been laid over on its side, breaking the usual stuff. Runs great, and didnt need any work for inspection. Only really bad thing I have found is that the upper fairing stay is bent a little bit.
yeah, all that usually means is that somone lowsided it. If the frame gets bent, people usually just part em out. Insurance companies have to replace everything with OEM parts if they are still availible. It would cost a fortune to buy all the fairings, headlights, bars ect straight from honda. Then throw on the labor at $85 an hour and it's very easy to get over a used bikes value. Even if the damage is estimated at 75% of the total value. they still total it in case of "hidden damages". Just give it a thorought inspection, and a test ride. Go for it, save some money!

the bike could be perfect mechanically and structurally but insurance will salvage it out because of what it would cost to replace everything
A salvage title bike can be a great deal.
You are correct in assuming that a look-over should be suffice (with an accompaning ride). Remove all the fairings (you can leave the upper), and just look it over for non-factory welds, any sanding on the frame, bends, dents, steering lock tabs, swingarm for welds, sanding, twists, bends. Engine covers, oil pan, engine block for inconspicous oil drips.
A salvage title can be agold mine. I personally know 2 people that simply low-sided and trashed the fairings. Insurance company totaled it. Gave them a check to replace the bike and on both occasions, the guys I knew bought their bikes back from the insurance company for $500 (seems to be a magic number).
If the bike is solid and shows no signs of major repair or damage, buy it! Of course, if the deal is right. Some people seem to think a salvage title bike that's been rebuilt to perfection is still worth what a clear title bike would be. Not the case, in most instances, usually up to a couple of thousand less.
If the bike is BB at $4000 with a salvage title, I'd start offereing at $2500. No matter what that bike will never have the same value as it did.
I personally seek out salvage title bikes. Some of the best deals (and track bikes) can come from them!
