rear seat
so, the previous owner of my '02 CBR f4i broke the lock to my rear seat and i can't get it off, he said it worked but didn't have a key, so he tied a string so it will still open and when i pulled the string it broke. i had a key made but the lock doesn't work as i said. does anybody have a way to get the seat off without calling a locksmith, and without breaking anything?

Can undo the rear fairing piece and see if you can wiggle it around enough to try to reach in there and trip the lock. It's a simple door style beveled pull latch that holds the seat down. You can also drill a small 1/2 hole in the bottom of the undertail and reach in there with a screwdriver and trip the lock, then plug the hole with a rubber plug or bolt, etc.
In the pic below you can see the mechanism, the latch is on the left, the pull cable on the right, between them where the cable connects to a swivel that goes into the latch is the easiest place to get ahold of and pull to the right to release the latch holding the seat. Good luck. If you need to replace the latch/lock assembly I removed my keyed entry and used a carb choke cable to run back to it that terminated in a pull **** that terminates right next to where the bolts holding the front seat on are. I just reach into that area between the seat and the fairing that you need to go inbto to remove the seat bolts and toggle the latch that way. Pretty secure seeing as noone normally has the slightest idea its there.

should be the same key.
i had the same problem with my rear seat when i got my 2001 cbr f4i (would not open) and all i did was to take off the main seat and reach under the passenger seat. the mechanism is pretty easy to move with your fingers into the open position (like hangfire mentioned). tight fit with the forearm, but if you can get a look at the lock it just slides back and forth to lock/un-lock. mess with that until you can pop the seat off with your free hand. kind of sucks, but i have good size forearms and it wasn't that hard. once you get the rear seat off, it's just figuring out how to fix the problem (which shouldn't be that hard). could be the wrong key...but my guess is that you'll find the key you have moves the lock open just a little bit, but not enough to release the seat. i actually considered just running a string off of the wire (for a second) to open it. probably what he did. but that kind of is a lazy *** way to fix it. took me about an hour from start to finish (just messing around with the wire to get it to the right tension took the most time). my lock wasn't opening enough because there was too much play in the wire. i ran the wire a little different and wrapped a little electrical tape to take out the slack and now it works like a charm.

After you get it open if your lock is broken get this

I bought one and wired it on my 954rr. I wired it so that the trunk wouldn't pop unless the bike was on. I mounted the button by my speedo. It works awesome. It is cheap easy and works much better than a string or anything else.

My 02 doesnt have a lock! it only has this little pull thing...i just thought it didnt have one... it looks exactly like the little skinny piece of metal with a ball on the end of it that you pull...in the photo i think its the piece directly left of the screw on the right(or looks like it anyways) ....Why would my bike be like this?!?
Dosen't have a lock?? I am not getting this. You mean the cable is hanging so you can pull on it? The cable should connect to the lock. What happened was the lock broke or something and the pull cable is just used now very common and easy to fix. A lot of the beat up bikes I get are this way. It usually happens on the wrecked ones cause the keys get lost or other locks are switched.
yeah, its just a little pull cable...from what i know my bike has never been wrecked... i mean fairings have a little minor knicks and dings its a used bike i can live with that..oh well i plan on replacing my undertail anyways...kind of pisses me off though....maybe it has been wrecked cause there are a few minor things that arent exactly "right" like my front tire fairing is black...no lock on the seat...a couple nasty dings on the the tank (just chipped paint) nothing actually shows signs of being laid down though..
