A rant about motorcycle endorsements in the state of MS
ive tried twice to get my motorcycle endorsement, and failed to do so both times. no, not because im dumb, or cant ride. because in the state of mississippi in order to get a motorcycle endorsement, you have to have someone with a motorcycle endorsement take you to the dmv, or haul your bike to the dmv on a trailer (and they have to watch you unload it). there is also the msf course, but work gets in the way of me taking a 3 day course.
so i dont have a truck, trailer, or any local friends with an endorsement so ive resorted to knocking on random neighbors doors to see if anyone is kind enough to help a brother out. luckily, one of my neighbors is going to go down there with me next week.
i just find it a tad absurd. the first time i went, the lady asked and i told her the truth, "i have my permit, so i just rode up here. its only a mile to my house." no dice. the second attempt, i tried another dmv. i got there about 45 minutes before they opened, and waited. i watched all the employees arrive. when i go in, they asked again, this time my answer was "my buddy brought it up here in his truck, but he had to be at work at 8am, so he left", she replied "well, we have to see you unload it".
"you cant just take my word as an honest citizen trying to get legal".
"im sorry sir, we cant issue you a license", okay, but you are fine with me walking outside, and climbing on that bike and riding home without a license? classic example of people who let red tape and regulations interfere with common sense. maybe they should be providing the motorcycle for the road test. hell, that would be a better use of tax dollars.
anyhoo, im sure im not the only one. i feel better now. carry on

That's crazy...i thought the reason for them to issue you a permit is for you to practice during daylight hours and no highway/freeway riding.
I got my license this way, pemit first, practice then schedule skills test. Ride my bike their and take the test...that don't make sense in your State.

That sucks.
Here in Montana, you can get a permit but can't ride your motorcycle unless you are riding with somebody who has the endorsement. The MSF Basic Rider Course is only 2 days here and if you successfully complete the MSF BRC, you don't have to go to the DMV and do the skills test.
I can see where you're frustrated! For me, all my friends that have a motorcycle work out of town, so I'm limited to only riding once or twice every couple weeks, or take the chance and go out on my own. I've done both....

the permit states that you can ride, as long as you are accompanied by someone with an endorsement. but like i said, i rode my bike down to the dmv, by myself, and they had no problems issuing the permit knowing that i had ridden my bike down there, unaccompanied.
the first time i got turned away for the endorsement, i thought it was just one hardass at the dmv. so when i went back to a different dmv and got the same story, i figured it must have been some kind of policy.
i guess its my states way of pushing riders toward the msf course. I have ridden dirtbikes for many years though, so the transition to street has been very easy for me. i dont feel the need to take the course, but i probably will this spring to try and get the insurance discount.
seriously though, if my neighbor wouldnt have agreed, i would have called the local police and asked for an escort to the dmv. i can be as absurd as they are if need be. i pay my taxes, and im trying to do the right thing. ive been riding without my endorsement for 3 months now and i definitely dont want to get a $200+ ticket for it.
