Default Question

Is it just me or does anyone else do this.

When shifting either up or down, when I am in 3rd going to 4th, 5th, and 6th sometimes I don't use my clutch, I shift right up or down without a problem.

Is this going to cause a problem with my gear box? there is no hesitation when it shifts and I am not "slamming" it into gear either.

nope i've never done that. i've never tried either though.

so you're doing that w/o the clutch and it's slipping in gear w/o problems?

Yup, i've done it. Only up shifting though.I do it when I launch real hard from first all the way through the gears. As to hurting the bike, I don't think so, but, could be wrong. You can do the same thing with a stick shift car too. If you get it in the powerband, you can shift without the clutch. Makes for quicker shifts. Just my thoughts

I do it to sometimes, but only when shifting from 3rd gear up. I've seen a couple of discussions on this on other boards, and I think the general concesus is that it won't harm your bike. It actually does make for a pretty smooth shift, when you get the rpms right where they need to be, its almost like it gets sucked into gear. I'm sure there's someone here that can give a more technical reason though.

Getting sucked into gear sounds pretty technical to me

when you do this your are putting alot of pressure on your syncros i know you launch and pick up speed better but your hurting it pretty bad by doing that it may not seem like it but in the long run youll have problems sooner than you would if you would just use the clutch it is there for a reason you know

I'm not sure if there are synchro's in our trannys or not but you would be hurting them if there are. The clutch is there for a reason obviously and though it most likely won't do a great deal of damage to your bike it will hurt it some. I would say if you are doing some racing, especially 1/4 mile, then i can understand not using it to gain a quicker shift. If you're just riding on the street though use the clutch, thats what its there for.

ok,I thought that it might be doing a little more wear and tear on the gears, so I don't do it all the time. Guess I will consider not doing it any more. Thanks for the thoguhts.

there has to be syncros that is how a manual trans works dose not matter if it is a big rig or a dirt bike. but i agree with you use the clutch that is what it is there for were not moto gp racers if we break something our sponcers are not going to pay for it
