Default Not a good story and some debate

Found this posted on a dog forum I'm on: 4 Day Old Baby Killed By Family Dog

It's a massive tragedy for the family. The 'reporter' in the video almost makes my stomach turn as it seems he is so intent on blaming the breed in general, posing his questions like he's saying "How did you not expect this from a pitbull?!?". I think Victoria Stillwell did a good job in attempting to deflect and defuse. But even she had to admit that leaving an infant in the presence of a dog with a high prey drive is an extremely bad idea

My thoughts on it is the parents are almost criminally irresponsible. "Almost" because there is no judgement a court can hand down that will punish them more than their loss. But what is also disconcerting is that some animal lovers thinking the dog responsible shouldn't have been put down. That somehow the dog can be safely rehabilitated.

I love my dog Kai. But if he did kill a human or even another dog or cat in anything other than self-defense, I don't think I could oppose euthanasia (canaries and guinea pigs are fair game tho). I'd know I had horribly failed him somewhere in training and care of him. And it'd tear me apart. But lethal unprovoked aggression is the point of no return. There is no proving that the dog wouldn't do it again. Every day would be a new gamble with a life being the stakes.

And Kai's breed is known to have a high prey drive too. They're generally not to be trusted off leash or around any small animals that may resemble prey.

I didnt get to watch it since im at work but from your post it sound like this.

Baby was killed by pitbull due to parental negligence. The fact that the dog is a pitbull has the media in a craze im sure.

Anyways its sad that this has happened but its the parents fault. The dog is an animal and has animal traits(who would have thought). Its not like the dog knew it wasnt going to get attention anymore and decided to kill the baby.

I think the animal should be put down just because no one will ever want him with his history and i think the parents should be facing child endangerment, and manslaughter charges.

Well.. If any pet, no matter how close, kills a human being (obviously not like a robber, that's ok., but a small child or someone young.) then it should be put down. As sad as it is to do that to your pet... you've gotta think about what they did to the kid and how the parents must feel. If it did it once, it could do it again.

As for the whole media craze over pitbulls - it's pure bull****. Like, any dog, if trained properly, they are fine. Obviously if you see that it's bat**** crazy and wants to kill kill kill, you're not going to stick it in a room with other pets or kids. You're going to put it down or give it away... But this whole thing about "SHOULD PITBULLS BE BANNED?!?!11" in the news every day is pretty much retarded.

I really want a german shepard or a siberian husky when I get out of my dad's place. I really hope also that they aren't BANNED due to some stupid media fearmongering BULL****. I'm going to raise it right, discipline it, and if it isn't ****ing crazed, it's not going to go around killing ****.

Dogs are great companions, but you cannot lose the fact that they are animals first. They will always possess that. Just like us, no matter how much we have been raised we can and will lash out. I look at it the same with all animals including us. If a animal kills a person who is innocent (as stated above a robber is different) then he should be killed. If a person kills a person not out of self defense then that person should die. F*ck that "insane" plea bulls*t. Plan and simple im a supporting fan of the death penalty even with animals. I love Texas for this......

Why is it every time a pitbull attacks someone its always "loving sweet dog", if its eating a baby then I have a hard time believing that this is the first time hes attacked someone....I almost got a pitbull after I put my doberman down but my city has crazy laws against them and to me its not worth it. I dont think the breed needs to be banned but I think you need to know how to properly train and handle a dog to own one. Any larger breeds like a doberman, rott, pitbull they can all be vicious dogs if not properly trained and people fail to realize this....One thing I would never do is leave a baby alone with a dog, to me the baby should have been in a crib and not just on the bed. Either way the dog deserved to be put down, if a dog bites someone in anything other than self defense then it needs to be put down.
