Twisty Metal. I feel bad that you think that the Coast Guard was left out. I thought I pretty much covered that with the statement "The utmost respect for anyone who steps into harms way, here or abroad", but I'm sure that most realize that the Coast Guard does more to secure our waterways than anyone and are a vital part of Homeland security along with conducting a search and rescue operations and all of the other wonderful services that the Coast Guard provides and it probably interacts with civilians more than anyone else. But as BP stated just wasn't thinking that a mechanical engineering degree was a field the Coast Guard could use help in and as far as those with prior service in different branches and them flocking to the Coast Guard. Only you know the answer to that, but I would like to say. Semper Fidelis Semper Paratus

I am glad that you decided to sit down with the Marine Corps recruiter and let him help evaluate your situation. I won't pull any punches as it has been clearly stated here before, regardless of the branch. If you decide to sign a contract read it very carefully. Make sure everything that you have been promised and you have agreed to is clearly stated in the contract. I haven't heard too many complaints from within my family or from those whom I have served with. Now for my family, we have a long history of service with the Marine Corps and are fully aware of how the system works. As for those others who are either under my command or, whom I come in contact with. They may be reluctant to vent their frustration, but you must understand Within Recon and Force Recon. These are individuals who have struggled and went the extra mile to get to where they're at and would not whine over the little things. They are striving to reach the pinnacle of success within their chosen field I am always glad to see anyone willing to take a stand for this country. But that is the reason I recommended the PLC course and in a roundabout way, suggested the reserves is always a good route for someone who has a viable skill in the civilian market, but is still willing to serve their country. It requires a special kind of balance, be aware of that, as far as the contract situation goes. You will absolutely have to live up to your end of the bargain. Most branches take a very dim view of those who promise and can't deliver. And a lot of those individuals end up with a RE 3 rating or worse

Yea I actually just talked to a recruiter for the marines and he definitly turned me off from doing this, well atleast with the marines, but in a good way. He didn't give me any bs and just told me how it is, and I don't think the marines is for me. I would love to be part of something as elite and respectable as the marines, but it seems like my career as an engineer would kinda be put on hold, and the whole reason I want to do something like this is to build my knowledge and career as an engineer. The other branches are probably similar in that I would have to be lucky to do something with engineering, or even close.
seriously?!? i would say if you went to college in the first place and you have a career.....wtf are you even thinking of joinging the armed forces for? i mean sure its great for some people that arent qualified to do anything else, not motivated to achieve goals on their own, were forced to join or go to prison, couldnt get into college, love their country, like playing with guns, like killing forigeners cause some guy with a silly hat told them too, enjoy war games, have a viable skill for killing, want to run 5 miles at 4am, want to be broke, want to have their family worry about them and possibly have to burry them at 18, this list could go on forever.....im NOT SAYING THERE ARENT POSITIVE REASONS TO JOIN!!!! GET THAT STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU EVEN BOTHER WRITING ME ABOUT HOW I DONT LOVE MY COUNTRY

but seriously, you've already started on one path....why not finish it up instead of throwing it away ? you'll make 30x the money over your lifetime and be able to live comfortably....

Guys...we have already done this! You are both valued members on this site, and baiting is not acceptable. People have a right to an opinion, but there is no need to bait others for a response on this forum. Military members are appreciated here, but e-fighting is a waste of everyone's energy. Please play nice, and understand that people on opposite sides of the fence will rarely change the other's beliefs. Leave it alone...thanks in advance. [sm=Awwww.gif]

seriously?!? i would say if you went to college in the first place and you have a career.....wtf are you even thinking of joinging the armed forces for?

i mean sure its great for some people that arent qualified to do anything else
1.)I myself am a fully qualified Air Traffic Control Specialist.

not motivated to achieve goals on their own
2.)One of my long time goals in life was to become either a jet pilot or an Air Traffic Controller, I was self motivated to achieve this goal.

were forced to join or go to prison, couldnt get into college, love their country, like playing with guns, like killing forigeners cause some guy with a silly hat told them too
3.)I was not forced to join because of a felony I commited. I was accepted to a college. I do love my country. I don't like to play with guns, I have a respect for guns just like all
other gun owners should. I don't like killing anyone because the President of the United States told us to.

enjoy war games, have a viable skill for killing, want to run 5 miles at 4am, want to be broke, want to have their family worry about them and possibly have to burry them at 18
4.)I don't enjoy war games, I find them quite annoying. I don't have a skill to kill. I don't run 5 miles in a year because I'm not required too. I'm not broke. I do have a family that worries. And there's no possible way I could be burried at 18 because I'm 22.

this list could go on forever.....im NOT SAYING THERE ARENT POSITIVE REASONS TO JOIN!!!! GET THAT STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU EVEN BOTHER WRITING ME ABOUT HOW I DONT LOVE MY COUNTRY
5.)You must go through everyday wondering about the "if's" in life. Everything you have listed I could put in a civilian world as well.
a.)You work for an employer therefore you have a boss. The boss tells you to accomplish a task. And guess what, you accomplish that task because if you don't you get fired.
b.)You're not a motivated individual therefore you go and work at McDonalds because you're not qualified to work anywhere else.

but seriously, you've already started on one path....why not finish it up instead of throwing it away ? you'll make 30x the money over your lifetime and be able to live comfortably....
Some people actually make a living being consultants telling people what would be best for them/a company. - And I highly doubt you are one of them.

Get your facts straight before you go on a rant no one cares to hear about.

Third rate baiting, man. The **** that dribbles out of your mouth is just silly and unimaginative. Going for the widest targets every time is like a broke-dick hack trying to muster up a chub. Not once since you joined has anything interesting come from your hole: HOW TO PAINT!!--'er, nevermind, I was just making up a topic that I had no intention to follow through'--and you're not even a real racist, you smoke pot with your Mexican pals every day. Erasing posts is just chicken, Thomchicken, if you want to see how it's really done, wait for MotoGPFan to have a manic relapse and flame the entire board again. Why would you only strive for 'mildy annoying' and 'unclever'? If that's the best you got, just pack up your herpes and waddle somewhere else.
