Doing a figure 8 on a sportbike SUCKS if you have no experience and that is a mandatory portion of many states' testing
for all the military members like me out there it is absolutely required and its free on post. just get with your post/base safety office. and, in most states the BRC/ERC will qualify you for your license without having to schedule a test through them. you just take in your MSF card and pick up your new license. Also for the military, they require us to take the sport bike class after you get both BRC and ERC and every time we deploy we have to take the refresher course before we ride when we get back.

I never took it.

I too have heard the military requires it if you are in the service and plan to ride on base.

My insurance discount was equal to $3.00 per year.

Some states require the insurance company to give 5% credit for completion of the MSF ... so either you don't live in one of those states or your insurance is damn cheap ...

Do it .........it's worth every penny in so many ways and a great way to get your license
endorsement all in one shot over a week-end. They try to wean people away from
all the usual bad habits they bring with them and get them more comfortable with
general safe & expected methods of controlling and riding the bike.

They put me the big fella on the largest bike they had, a brand new 250 cc

enjoyed it though, well worth the time and effort and it's only gotten better from
there....experienced riders class later was just as good .....can't recommend it enough

You won't regret it ! & as previously posted it does shave % off your ins' premiums

Definitely take the course when you can! I took it shortly after I got my permit and before I could develop any bad and dangerous habits. It teaches you to think consciously about things you would otherwise take for granted, like countersteering. Those things will save your life in an emergency.

The test for your license is also far easier through the course than just going down to the DMV. As stated earlier, depending on the size of the box, a figure 8 on a sportbike is HARD, especially for a novice rider, and is required in many states.

The icing on the cake is that it's also a just a blast to whip around a parking lot on 125 and 250 motorcycles.

It's not required here but I'm glad I took it. It was my first time on a bike, learned a lot more than a book or friends could teach me. We have a friend who's been riding on a permit for years, he's finally going to take the class so that he doesn't have to do the DMV course on his GSXR 1000.

Yeah - it was 200/year versus 197/year with the MSF course.

I also live in an area where I could ride and practice without any danger......
