Default RE: Long Trip

I've done a few long rides with various bikes. I've run from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Kingston Ontario in one day... ~1700km and I've ridden from Halifax to south of Albany NY in a day and a half a few times. I've done ~1500km days on the F4 this summer and next summer I plan on taking it further.

The webbing idea is a great one from twisted. They're really good for securing gear onto the tail of the bike.

I do pack tools when I ride. Not many as on a bike most stuff is a common size. I pack enough tools that I can adjust the chain, lube the chain, tighten fasteners... I've had battery terminal nuts break so I carry spare nuts for those, and I also carry some zip ties as in most cases you can do something with them. Duct tape is also good... as is spare oil.

I can pack for a week on the tail of the F4, including a mini tent and a mini sleeping bag.

I haven't gotten a tank bag for this bike yet - however - a map pocket and money for the tolls is a must. Put a few electrolite rich drinks and water in it... along with granola bars and fruit. I haven't found I ever got hungry on the road, but I do find this type of food gives me good energry.

The important stuff. Make sure the bike is ready for it a week in advance. Is the chain good. Are the tires good. What's the oil level. The night before check the oil level again and fill up. It's amazing how much of a difference it is to ride 2 hours without stopping in the morning, than ride 30 minutes and have to stop for gas.

Don't stop moving on the bike. Tuck in out of the wind is good - but don't stay in one position or your legs and back will really pay the price. I like to lay on the gas tank to relax my back. I like to take my feet off the pegs and do little leg stretchs. I will put my feet on the rear passenger pegs to stretch as well. Don't wait for a muscle to hurt, keep moving and they won't hurt. Holding one rigid position will work for maybe 3 hours, but not for an entire day.

Keep an eye out for the weather - packing a spare sweater in the middle of the summer may seem stupid but after a rain storm or at night you may want it. I know I've wanted it in the past and been really happy I packed it.

Bon voyage!
Woot.

this is a little off topic... but my no 1 carb doesnt seem to be firing at the same speed as the other 3 it sounds a bit clunky... do u think this could become a major problem when i take it on a long trip? I asked for advice in the general tech but didnt get any response.
