You'll get a reduction on your insurance - both bike and car - for taking the safety class. That should pay for at least some of the $200.

That is what my California M1 test consisted of.........
I took it on a Yamaha Seca 650.
I raised the idle to about 2200rpms and feathered the clutch through
the circle, went down the straight lines,
did another circle and stopped, only putting one foot down.
Put two feet down when you come to a stop and they will fail you.
Took about 5 minutes to do everything, including getting
instructions from the test giver.

RE: just my permit??
Some cops don't understand the difference in your permit and license. In KY in a car you have to have your permit for 6 months before getting a license and you have to have an adult over 21 riding with you. (I don't know if that is everywhere or what). When I had my motorcycle permit a cop pulled me over for doing 60 in a 35 and he noticed I only had my permit and asked why an adult wasn't riding on my motorcycle with me. I had to explain to him that with a permit you can't ride with a passenger you have to have your license. He told me thanks for the information and gave me a ticket for doing 15 over the limit.

Haha, I had a friend that got caught like 3 or 4 times with only his permit at night. The last time, it was on the hiway, and they made him park his bike and walk home. I had to come get it at like 2 in the morning. In Mo. they must not care as much? I've always had just my license, but seem pretty relaxed on the permit/license difference around here.

RE: just my permit??
I rode without a license for 7 years and just fianlly got legal this year..i took a MSF course..made it in as a walk in..and passed with flyin colors and it is sooo much better knowing i dont have to worry about getting stopped and not having a license anymore..so if you have passed the course go to the DMV..they just update..u dont have to take the DMV test again....

I also wouldn't recommend riding outside of your permit's restrictions (even though I used to do it, I was always scared $hitless that I would get pulled over). Just be careful.
I got my permit when I passed the written test at the Secretary of State (MI) but failed the driving test miserably! I hear ya about that darned figure 8/U-turn. But when I took the MSF class it was a breeze on those smaller bikes.
And boy do I feel sorry for you guys who have paid $160-$200 for that class. I took it up in the U.P., it was sponsored by Northern Michigan Univ., and it only cost me $25!!! Don't believe me?
