- Cat, I was reading or heard somewhere that scientists now think that if you started in a spaceship going in one direction, and just kept going, for light years and light years, that eventually you would end up back at earth. Think about that at night, lol.

space is supposed to just go on forever...
space is supposed to just go on forever...
Evidently, the universe is flat, like a very thick sheet of paper, yet is continually expanding and will do so forever.
And since it keeps growing at the speed of light, no one could ever reach the "edge".
Even stranger, the idea that many parallel universes exist very close to ours, stacked on top of one another like a ream of paper. Literally within a millimeter. So I guess we actually live in a book...Atreyu, you must reach the Oracle! lol
One theory suggests parallel universes occupy the same space as ours, yet operate on different time...which means when you sit down to eat Cheerios, a T-Rex is running through your living room, you just cannot see it.

I'm a Hubble/space/telescope/photog freak. I think I have every Hubble pic in high res stached. I've scoured the nnet high and low.
Those are great images. www.space.com is one of my home tabs and I read there daily.

If it's open, it will go on forever.... If it's flat, then it will expand for an infinite time but slow after a while. Obviously, if it's closed... Then eventually it will run out of "space" and collapse on itself.
Parallel Universes, Ah, into Quantum Physics.. Cool stuff.

So even if we built a starship capable of the speed of light (C) ..then it would still take 50,000 years to traverse it ..even our own galaxy from memory is 100,000 light years across so it would take us 100,000 years to get across our own galaxy, never mind the vast voids between the galaxies to reach another ... the universe could be teaming with life out there and we will never know or reach them ..you know just maybe thats how its meant to be!!

That first one is amazing- 800 billion suns... 50,000 light years across. What a distance, wow.

That's it though Jules ...someone or something jammed us over in the corner of the bloody universe to stop us from causing to much **** for other civilizations ...

Ok, so with the theory that the universe IS still expanding ( theoridically (sp) still in the midst of the big bang), There is one of three predictors as to whether the universe is flat, round (as Jfunk said), and closed.
If it's open, it will go on forever.... If it's flat, then it will expand for an infinite time but slow after a while. Obviously, if it's closed... Then eventually it will run out of "space" and collapse on itself.

So I will just say ..
Space cant actually ever actually end ..
Space is just space ..if it ended (like a wall for example) that fact that a wall was in front of you would mean that something must be or was on the other dam side , even if it was just more nothing or bloody space, a buncha black holes , a huge gooey mess , plasma storms , weird unknown ugly scary things , what ever ....
And ok ..as for the collapse back on it self thing .... if it does collapse what would be left ..??
Their really can be no such thing as actual nothing
What ****s me is that all of us will be long gone before we ever get to know fully the real facts about all this stuff ....space, time, parallel universes , why we are here or why anything exists for that matter ..
think I just gave myself a headache..
