How in the hell do I check my tire pressure?
I don't quite buy the gas station conspiracy theory...I just attribute it to the many people who use them then throw them around. People don't take care of anything that is for public use, which is why I won't drop a deuce in 99% of public bathrooms.

I know some get very **** regarding pressure's ... and yer they are important once the things get real low , or you ride like a bloody mad man every day around windy treacherous roads ... but really ..on the road in general , spare yourself the headache ....1 or 2 LBS .... arrr ... you would be hard pressed to pick the difference on the bike...
i had two good digital ones tell me i was at like 60...then an inline hose one at a friends garage tell me 15...but i could visibly see it wasn't 15...so i just left it where it was...
I have a pair of those pressure caps with different colours which tell you if the pressure's down, but +1 theX - get a good digital meter and stick with it - most garages have inaccurate gauges on the air hoses....

you really loose a pound of pressure per week? I havent lost a pound of pressure all summer...

maybe my gauge is getting un-calibrated from sitting. who knows...I just feel unsafe if i'm not at the perfect pressure. it's a personal thing
I just use the tire kick method......
In all seriousness, I would get those tires checked if you are losing a pound a week.
I would also spend the money and invest in a good quality air guage. The pen style ones are good and pretty accurate, but not perfect. Go get yourself one of those air tanks that hold a good amount of air. You can periodically fill them at the station. You would be surprised at how long you can use one before you have to return to the station to fill it up. Much cheaper than an actual air compressor, but will function like one for you.
