I wouldnt load Vista on a computer 3 years old....it is only reccomended on computers 2 yyears or newer, and it still might not be compatiable with your hardware.....I would also wait a few months because there are going to be alot of security holes the first couple of months like any new OS.

Bushmaster...what does Norton say when you try to connect to the internet?

OK this may sound like a bunch of non-sense to you but basically what it boils down to is that your system will not handle Vista.
To run Vista you will need an 800mhz processor which you do have, but will need at least 512 GB RAM (1 GB is recommended) a video card with at least 128MB (yours is shared with your CPU up to 64MB max) and at least 15GB of hard drive space.
So if you are dead set on making that PC run Vista you will need to upgrade your RAM to about 1 GB:
A larger hard drive:
and a new video card (you will have to disable your old one):
[left][size=3]So you are looking at $200 roughly for upgrades. Just so you are aware you

Internal means it would stay in your PC. It would also be what you wanted if you want to upgrade to Vista. They also have had a tendency to be more reliable. If you like to transfer files between work and home I would suggest something like a USB 2.0 or firewire external drive (you would have to buy firewire cards but they are smoking fast). best bet would be just an internal EIDE drive and a USB flash drive if you need to move stuff between work and home (or just open a remote desktop connection).

Got your PM about the tags, need to wait till I get my VA money for next month before I pay anything else.

yeah, it pretty much looks like personal preference on what you can do. do you want to spend the extra cash to get a system that is ready for next gen upgrades (i use this term very lightly), or do you want to upgrade your current system to its max and have to buy a completely new system next time, minus HD and RAM. any upgrade will make a substantial impact on your performance right now. 256MB of RAM just doesnt cut it nowadays.

I would also wait a few months because there are going to be alot of security holes the first couple of months like any new OS.
meh, i have been running vista full time at work since Nov and have had no issues yet. Some difficulty running apps but that is due to the new feature of never actually running as admin, but that is it. Once the developers get used to vista everything will be better, its just that most companies dont have vista compatible software or drivers yet, which is no fault of Microsoft's.

Its my understanding that all drivers for Vista will have to be digitally signed correct? I know this will cut down on the amount of attacks that are possible, but I want to make sure that the drivers I want will be there when I do go. Thats my big concern about Vista.

Well, I am going to buy the Ram Telgren showed me, maybe two if I can so I can have a gig of ram. As for the HD, Externals are on huge sales down here for some reason. 200GB for about $100-$140 for an external. But since it seems like it is going to be a b**** to get it able to run Vista, I think I am just going to find somewhere that has the XP Pro for a decent price and upgrade to that. But thanks for all your help guys!!! Very much appreciated!!!

If you do buy an external - then remove your current hd, remove the 200gig hd from the external, and swap. You want the newer bigger hd for your OS and files... the older smaller one is still a huge ammount of external space.

You'll get a way better deal buying the external enclosure and drive seperately from a computer store...

Forget about vista... I'm still running 98se on computers where it is appropriate... xp pro is a really nice OS... no problems with it at all.
