Special effects are mearly a band-aid for lousy storytelling. Some animated movies are very good, this should tell you how little we need a $20 million per picture movie star.

Personally, I hate large usage of CG. My main example will be the 70s Star Wars vs the newer crap. I was a total Star Wars kid. When the new movies came out I was WTFing everwhere. The older movies had real cockpits, the aliens were real suits, the ships were detailed models. The newer movie basiclly everything was CG. I play ALOT of video games and can easly tell when crap is CG or real within the first second.
If the place were they screen the movie was nothing but an actor in a green room and everything that he interacted with as CG then the movie loses a lot of appeal with me.
Say you get some aliens, 1 is like a real moving model or costum vs CG crap. Id be with the one thats not computerized "OH Its real!!!" vs the CG "I can tell its CG..."
Its another story with cartoons though...

We like all kinds of things when we are kids, but our tastes in likes and dislikes refine over the years. (Hopefully anyway)

not quite, but almost.
It will get to a point to where it is indistinguishable from real life scenes and actors. Mark my words.

^^No, not a big fan of asian women. But if that's CG, they did a good job on it.
I HATE CG in movies though (well, bad, half-assed CG that is). The only CG I've found to be absolutely remarkable was in Transformers. But when I see CG in other movies (live-action movies using CG for stunts/fire/sparks, etc) when they could have used the real thing just ruins the movie for me.
