Question way off topic...lcd tvs

I was just wondering, being as we're such a diverse bunch, if any of you are up on all the b.s. jargon tv manufacturers use to make their products sound better than anybody else's. I realise this is way off bikes but, since we're in the Saloon, I thought I'd ask. We're upgrading the kid's tv room and going an lcd tv. We're on solar power so can't justify plasma, and need a flatscreen for space reasons so the good old crt is out. That leaves lcd. I'm up on most of the jargon (refresh rates, hertz, pixels etc.) but contrast ratio versus dynamic contrast ratio has me stumped. Contrast ratio is the difference between lightest and darkest, so what's the dynamic bull? I've Googled it but am still in the dark (sorry). Dynamic contrast ratio is always really high compared to contrast ratio and we're supposed to see a larger number and think it must be good. I've heard there is a number that you can divide by to get the true contrast ratio, but can't find it. Don't spend time trying to find out for me, but it wouldn't surprise me if one of you will have this floating around in your head.

I got on a couple of tech sites to try and find out myself, but kept thinking about bikes, beer and other fun stuff and didn't seem to be able to concentrate..

Like I said, I know I'm way off bikes or anything related to them, but you don't know if you don't ask.

See you later.

I have a 37" LCD unit, not the "best" make, but it does well enough to watch the racing.
I'm told the "refresher rate" should be as fast as possible to give a better picture, but as for the rest I'm just as stumped.
I just went into a store that had a whole bunch of them, and found one in my price range that showed a decent pic. Not much help, I know, sorry.

No worries. I'm not a latest and greatest, gadget kind of guy and usually just walk into a store, spend ten minutes looking, point and say "I want that one" (picture Andy from little Britain). This time I thought I'd research a bit and am starting to wish I hadn't! Manufacturers advertise a couple of different models that are almost identical in specs but a few hundred bucks different in price.

I think they're taking the p!ss!

Steve. That's sound advice, trouble is I can get a good deal on one but it uses 160w and the more exy one only uses 111w. I think I'll end up with the more expensive one just to save the power. That's why I'm trying to get my head around all the other b.s. Little sods will have a better tv than we do! Ah well, when they leave home...

Solar: We've got 20 x 75w panels, so 1500w power coming in. Battery bank is 1100a/h. Inverter is 1600w all day, 2500w for half an hour with a 5000w surge capacity to start stuff running. 8kva genny for backup and running the stick welder.

If i remember correctly from how it was explained :

Contrast ratio is the true ratio between the lightest and the darkest a pixel can get.

Dynamic contrast ratio uses an increase or decrease in the backlighting of the pixels to emphasise the light and dark ends of the scale and increase the viewing contrast ratio. ( IE - it tricks the eyes in to seeing better contrast than there actually is )
