Default Help with Microsoft Excel Pivot Tables

I just learned how to use Pivot tables in my I.T. class and I've found a problem at work that a Pivot Table could be used to solve. Problem is, when I go to click on pivot table it is greyed out and wont let me choose it...I used it on this computer yesterday for my homework so I know it can be done...does anyone know what is wrong? Does the data have to be formatted in a certian way....the data that I'm trying to use has dates, names, id numbers, and amounts....about 5,000 lines.....
ANY help with this would be greatly appriciated!!! Thanks in advance

not sure how much help that first reply was, but oh well.

I can't recall ever seeing PivotTable grayed out, even with no data in a worksheet. What version of excel are you using? Try creating a new worksheet with no data in it and see if the PivotTable option is still grayed out.
