RE: Help choose me a new Helmet
I for one am rockin an HJC AC-12 right now. Really good helmet for the price. Comfortable and Snell approved. All the helmets for the poll are too busy for my liking but if I had to choose i'd go with the gambler. If I was choosing a helmet based on looks, i'd go for one of the Icon decays like ffingers has. Those are sweet lookin and I personally like Icon gear. Everybody yappin about Icon quality, maybe those helmets split because they distribute the blow so well. Still have yet to see all these pics everyone is talking about split helmets. I would bet we could find more pics of other helmet manufacturers split helmets than Icon. Does anyone happen to know if any of Icon's helmets are Snell approved? That isnt as simple as a DOT rating to get stamped on.

Yeah, Snell isn't all it's cracked up to be (hah!)...according to Motorcyclist magazine, they're decidedly pig-headed about antique methods (read the latest issue or check it out online). They did a test awhile back where an $80 cheapo outperformed a $300+ lid by a decent margin.
It really pays to read quality reviews of helmets and to try them on before buying. The Snell and DOT labels are more marketing than true safety assurance, though they're not without merit.
Or, you can save yourself the cracked noggin by fitting it with an Arai or Shoei...

RE: Help choose me a new Helmet
Im pretty sure that all ICON helmets are snell approved. Everyone that I have personally seen had been, mine is also snell approved.
I was just looking at them online, and looked at the DOT stickers, and all that I looked at also had snell stamped on as well.

RE: Help choose me a new Helmet
yeah snell doesn't mean a whole lot at this point
as for DOT, helmets aren't sent to DOT for testing, the companies are supposed to them themselves and pop the stickers on there, basically the honors system. DOT does do random testing on helmets bought through retailers to keep them fairly honest but DOT standars aren't really very high
