Helmet Question
Can anyone can tell me why are the SHOEI helmets so expensive? What makes it so better that Icon helmets? This may be a stupid question for some of ya'll but I dont know, so that's why I'm asking...Thanks
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Shoei goes as far back as Bell. They have a long-lasting name in the helmet manufacturing business. Their reliability quality andcustomer service, could be just a few of the reasons for the price of the helmet. Besides, what is your head worth? As you can tell by my photo. I wear an Icon but I would not buy it again. It is a polycarbonate helmet and I would personally prefer something made of a little stronger material than a exotic plastic-based product. A fully intend within the next year to upgrade myself and have had good success in the past with HJC . I particular like the AC 11. Its shell construction is Ultra light weight advanced composite weave fiberglass, Dyneema, Kevlar shell and is reasonably priced as a matter of fact. for the quality of the material used,

Im not sure about strenght or quality. in my HJC ive hit the pavement hard enough to knock me out and my helmet did not break. I ride with a CL 15 ( http://www.hjchelmets.com/cl15.htm ).
I think it is just name, presence in the racing industry, and reputation. My helmet retails for 130 dollars and I think it is of the upmost quality.

Would go along with your 100% on the HJC was wearing a HJC, FG tech a few years back (around 2001). One of HJC's fiberglass Kevlar helmets, and lay down my VFR. The bike was a total loss and fractured my scapula ( shoulder blade ). The helmet was scuffed up, but not cracked or in bad condition considering what it had been through

My RF-1000 Camber was $348 from The Helmet Shop in Daytona. The Arai I like was $100 more and the Suomy was $600. I kinda felt like a cheapskate buying the Shoei and not the Suomy. What I like about it is how easy the facesheild swaps out and the vetilation seems good enough for Central Florida in the summer.
the more expensive helmets for the most part are not safer than any other dot or snell approved helmet. They typically fit the better, vent better, softer interior lining, and are lighter weight. Not to mention have some pretty sweet graphics. I have a AGV Stealth and KBC both are awesome and less than half the prices of a shoei or arai.
HJC and Icon are the same thing, made by the same company. Shoei is so expensive because of all the research that they put into their helmets. They spent over $500 million on the development of the X-11 helmet. In windtunnels, the researchers, the developers, etc. So after spending all that money on just makinging it how they want it and excluding the cost of production, thy have to make their money back somehow.
i own both a hjc and a shoei .. the hjc i belive it would save my life if i cracked the ground ! .. but my shoei is very much nicer ! it breathes and is supper light i can feel the air moving around on the top of my head less nosie are just a few of the things that make a difference to alot of riders .. i live in hot a$$ az so i need alot of venting ! .. it like cars everybody could get around in a geo metro but alot of us would ratther not ! just prefance .. and thats my .02
