I work with a couple of guys who ride and they invited me out to ride with them one night. I met them at the 7 eleven at Norfolk State University which I guess is the hangout spot for guys with bikesto holler at girls and shoot the **** and all. So anyway we rolled out to the Mc'Donalds in Hampton (the other hangout spot) about 30 riders deep and I was one of maybe 3 or 4 white guys there. Honestly it felt very dangerous to me, we were going way to fast (I remember seeing 137 at onepoint on me speedo) on the interstate and everyone was trying to keep up with everyone else and since it was dark out that made switching lanes even more dangerous since when I take a quick look behind me to make surethere isn't another bikerightbehind meI'm blinded by lights. We were lane splitting past cars that were already doing well over the speed limit so the quote earlier about the majority of accidents happening in group rides doesn't surprise me at all.

I ride with a couple of groups. One group I was SO turned off by because as soon as we got onto an insane highway (we're talking I-95 to South Beach Miami), they rode like maniacs and scared the crap out of me. Now mind you- I'll be happy at 80-90 in these conditions, but they were going 100+ in and out of cars (traffic was heavy) and out of fear I'd lose them because I didn't know where I was going, I struggled to keep up... NEVER AGAIN!
So on the way back, they pulled the same crap again.. Then I smartened up and rode my way. I ended up meeting them all there at the next destination, but the point is- it took the fun out of riding in the group. I was back to riding alone again and honestly it pissed me off. I haven't ridden with this one group since and not sure if I will again.
The other group I ride with all stays together, period. That I like.
So we learn to ride our own ride, and not put our lives in danger. I try to be the good gal and stay with the slowest rider so they don't get lost or are stuck alone. If someone is with them, I ride further up front where I screw off once in a while (like the time I raced a Hayabusa and lost pitifully, but we won't discuss this).....
With my nerdy reading about group riding, I guess the key is to communicate before the ride to determine how the ride is going to be. Setting up rules, so to speak; meet up points for those speed racers to wait until others catch up, etc.
I'm half awake, so I hope it made sense.

If I'm ever in a group ride and I don't feel comfortable with what's going on, I just leave. Groups that ride crazy are part of the reason why sportbike riders have a bad name.
Yesterday I was eating lunch with some friends and their parents. The parents are in their 60's and ride a Harley. Through conversation, they found out I ride a 600cc sportbike, and their immediate response was, "Oooh, be careful on that thing."
What kind of reputation have we gotten??!!!
