Got a snake today
hey man congrats on the Venture into the world of Reptiles ...
I wanna make just one suggestion to ya though ...
After keeping reptiles for quite a long time I strongly reccomend that you don't feed in the habitat ...
That's gonna make the snake more prone to strike when you go to get him out ...
I'd recommend using the bath tub or a large deep rubbermaid container ...
I currently keep a 1 year old Burmese Python and 3 year old Ball Python.

Threat,
Hi. Nice snake(pictured), but it's not a Boa. It's a normal phase Ball Python(reduce banded at best)! One thing I don't understand though is that you said you paid $160 for it. That is a pet store Boa price, but you have a Ball Python pictured. Ball Pythons commonly sell for less then $100 at pet stores. I breed reptiles for a living and work with tons of high end Ball Python morphs(among other snakes). And Twitch is right, best not to feed in his cage if you don't want to get nailed accidentally one day when you go to pick him up. Sterilite containers work great for feeding tubs. Take care and enjoy the new addition. Later.

yeah my bad it is a Python. I was thinking Boa when I was gonna buy that red tail one. I'm building him or trying to build a bigger home for him. Wish I had some damn plans..lol
Threat,
Hi. I have built tons of cages over the years(stacks, displays and rack systems), but I have found that in the long run it's best just to buy one from a well known source. All Boids(pythons and boas) require a decent amount of humidity to have clean sheds and to prevent RI infections and more often then not a homemade wood cage won't hold enough humidity to do that. Even if they do hold the humidity, the wood usually rots within 3 years(even if coated in water/mold resistant paint). You will possibly end up with sick snake or at the very least...having to shed the snakes yourself (soak them in water then peel it off). Look into a cage made of plastic or melamine. Here is a link to some classified ads were you can find some nice cages made by some of the best in the industry. Boaphile is the company I use and prefer. Not exactly cheap, but they last a lifetime and maintain the proper humidity to keep your reptile a live and well. http://market.kingsnake.com/index.php?cat=22 Either pay a little now, or a lot later.
Also make sure he has a heat pad and that it is controlled by a thermostat(not a cheap rheostat you can get at petco, those dont' get the heat pad any lower then 100 degrees at best). You will eventually burn him up if you don't use a thermostat as the heat pads commonly sold at pets store stay above 100degrees all the time. The snake only needs a 90 degree basking/heat spot, anymore and it can be fatal. Reptiles are not the smartest things on the planet and they don't know to move in time before they get burned up and will often burn their belly scales sitting on an uncontrolled heat pad for an extended period of time. Good luck with your new snake. Enjoy.
BTW...I recently took in a 5.5' Columbian Redtail Boa from a kid that went back to college and couldn't take it with him. It's a great feeder on live large rats, but is a bit thin right now cause the dumb kid was only feeding it once every 6-8weeks (yikes). Let me know if you are interested in him and Ill give you more details and some pics. Later!

cool man thanks, I'm learning all I can, I bought books, videos and my friend who has the big one is schooling me too. I once was terrified of snakes but now I can pick him up like he is a puppy lol. Yeah I will buy a cage from a professional source, it might cost me alot but I know it will be worth it in the long run. After I fed him he been alseep and resting for almost a day now, he came out a few hrs ago and laid in the water then when back into his hut.
