Got a question about a guitar...
So, Today I figured I'd dust the old girl off and get her back up to "proper". Got her some new strings, cleaned her back off, spent about an hour and a half tuning it (trust me... it's a MAJOR pita), bought a new cord (solved some of my crackling problems I'd had with an old cord... which I also somehow misplaced), got a new battery plugged in, and started slowly plinking away at some random notes for the next couple of hours. Ahh, how I wish I knew even where to start.
I've wanted to learn how to play a guitar since I was in High school. I started to take lessons, then the guy up a disappeared from the shop. From there I had someone else (an AMAZING guitar player I met in college), jot down a few things, and started working with that, then I changed colleges. Never got more than one lesson out of either of them. That's the problem I have with alot of things... I just don't know how to get started right... and they sit in a closet for years till I get "back into" trying to get started again.
Soooo... my next question is, anybody know a good place to start learning to play? I need something simple, but progressively challenging. Get a DVD? Buy some books? Go take for real guitar lessons? Just google stuff online? What about working on Finger dexterity? That something that just comes with time? Who's got some suggestions and what worked for you guys that DO play?

I would say take guitar lessons for sure. It is soooo hard to be disciplined enough to sit down with a book 30 minutes a day, and get good. I have been playing since I was nine (25 years), but I have taken lessons as recently as this last summer. Always someone that knows so much more than you. I would say focus on chords and learning to read before you worry about lead guitar. You have to walk before you run. To be honest, the people that I think are the best guitar players know a TON of chords. Different inversion, 13ths, augmented, diminished, etc, etc, ect. Learn how to play good rhythm guitar also. Good rhythm guitar is the most underated aspect of playing IMO. Any jackass can try to play a bad version of "Eruption", but it takes someone special to be able to play "Little Wing" by Jimi Hendrix. That's my take...
