have a trused friend ride it to an open empty parking lot and do the basics. slow turns, braking, etc... Like 530Chain said, don't forget your other gear besided your lid.
I am glad I took the MSF course because the instructors are great and more than willing to work with you, plus you don't have to take your test if you pass the course.

Heres what you do
1. Start up the bike
2. Pull in the clutch
3. Shift into first
4. crank that throttle back to about 9 grand
5. Dump the clutch
6. Hold on for dear life
Neh im just playing
Do what flybub said and have a friend ride it out so you can practice the basics. I did the same thing when I first started riding and by the time I took my test, i already knew how to do everything pretty easily.
And dont act like its stupid or gay because it will look worse if you are in mid town traffic and you dump your bike then if you are out in the middle of nowhere and you dump it.

True dat "D". Again, good point. When ever you get that first oppertunity to go for your ride before you get on "STOP"!!! Think about your safety and remember that the bike will get you killed if you dont relax and take your time. Don't feel like you have to rush anything just because you might have friends that get nutz on their bikes. If you do have some buddies that ride dont let them push you to go faster. It only takes one mistake to mess you up or worse. Get comfortable. Get seat time. Lots of it.

MSF class is definitly a great place to start. After I took my class I started out slow. I went to a large parking lot and practiced doing turns and other manuvers. The thing I had trouble with was getting the clutch and gas control just right so I didn't kill the damn bike. Didn't take long to figure it out, MSF class teaches you good ways to do things. Best of luck.
