Default dmv ride test

so i got to thinking today that no one i know who has taken the dmv ride test (here in cali) has passed. even the instructor in charge said "most people who take this on anything bigger then a 250 will fail."

it made me really think when was that ride test invented? when you come up with that answer then you should think... what kinds of bikes were around at that time. when whomever was designing that damn course im sure they didnt have it in mind with the bikes of today .

i really think they should re design the test to make it more practicle forthe rider. it just seems that with the way everything else evolves that they shouldnt keep the same test. what was once the standard is now outdated.

imo it keeps people from getting legit. i know i cant pass the dmv test on my 9RR so im forced to goto the MSF course. which i have no problem doing (in fact i think it would be fun) but it sucks that here in cali for a rider over the age of 21 its $235.00 and someone under 21 its only $150.00. the sate of CA really should sponsor that program so that it gives teh chance for everyone on a motorcycle to learn PROPER RIDING TECHNIQUE. i think if this happened we wouldnt have so many fatalities and deffinetly we would have a lesser # of squids !

ive been riding forprobably over a year now and i would say i am agood rider.i could kill the dmv test no problem except for that damn circle test ! lolill try and goto dmv tommorrow and snap a pixof it so you can see what im talkin about. but its just a pain in the ***.

anyways thanks for listening to mebitch haha

Yeah, I'd like to know the dimensions of the circle test and what all is involved in it.

I'm glad I don't live in Cali... I hear all kinds of weird things from there.

Yeah, don't ask me... I don't even remember what mine involved other than zig-zagging around some cones and stopping with my front tire coming to rest on a white line. Other than that, I don't remember anything and it was just in the parking lot behind the local DMV. Of course, this was back in the mid 70's. That oughtta tell ya how old I am!!

Good god its tough. I got my lisence through MSF but I went back to the DMV parking lot after they were closed and tried to run the cicrle and I couldnt do it on my f4i. ThenI went back on my street legal dirt bike and did it no prob. MSF prices go up after you turn 21?!? Glad I took it a couple years ago.

from what i remember right now u have to goto a slalom course, a stright line 2x around the circle and a stop test i believe. and yes its pretty screwed up the msf prices out here are MORE expensive after you turn 21 you would think if you were under it would be more expensive . i dont understand that [>:]

If you belong to the Honda Riders Club, they reimburse you up to $75 I think for the MSF... at least that's what it was when my wife took the beginners course and I took the advanced course a while back.

Plus, make sure if you take the MSF, you send your certificate in to your insurance... saved me some on my premiums too.

don't know about other states but the one in GA seems pretty similar to the one in CA from what I've read. I think there's like one thing on the CA one that makes it slightly tougher (can't remember exactly what) but for the most part the same. A long time ago when I took it, I heard the same thing about being tougher on anything over 250. I went ahead and tried it on my 954rr and t wasn't easy but wasn't impossible and passed on 1st attempt ... but i have no problems with it being as tough as necessary based on some of the riders I've seen on the roads. If they can't pass it on any bike, they shouldn't have a license imo.

do you got anything to lose by trying it anyway (other than time)? I know here they give you more than one chance to pass. Of course, I'd practice their exact maneuvers in a parking lot to make sure you don't damage the bike doing something you're not prepared for.

I live in Wi. I missed the msf course 2 years in a row (they fill up in a day here) so i decided to heck with it and went to the dmv. Took the test on my 96 GSXR 750. Put on head set and orange vest, the instructor on bike behind me, no parking lot, just went out and did like 5 min of regular busy st. driving. Hit a side st and had to do a u turn and an emergency stop. Rode back to dmv and told me i passed, that was all that was to it lol. Sorry to hear it sucks so much in other places.
