EQ Came out in 99. Remember the system req's were so high, they started bundling the game with a stick of RAM? Comps in 1996 wouldn't have been able to TOUCH it.
The first graphical MMORPG was Neverwinter Nights, in 1991. You had to play it through AOL, as Steve Case (CEO of AOL) was a MASSIVE DnD fan, and was all about getting an MMORPG scene started over the Internet (Hey! AOL did something useful!).
Hell, even Ultima Online was out before EQ.

I still sort of stand by my original statement though. EQ was the game that really reached popular consciousness to the point where even people who didn't play knew what it was.
