Anyone want to explain how the team's name is the Patriots (pronounced with the same sound as "pay") , but their nickname is the "Pats" (pronounced as in the word "pat")? WTF?

Big Cowboys fan but I'm afraid the Patriots are going to tac on another W in this game. Although I thought for sure we would have lost to the Bears so I hope they pull this one off as well.
