Affordable gear?

Affordable gear?
OK, recommend me some gear. I have a decent set of gloves and a Scorpion EXO 700 helmet. But in reading about all the crashes here, and the fact that a friend of mine just died up in NJ on his bike last week(had a tire come out of nowhere and hit him, killing him on the spot), I am rethinking this gear issue.
I live in Atlanta, and it is bubble-gum hot here. For those that don't know, that means it is so hot that your sweaty bag sticks to your thigh and you have to peel it off as you would gum from your shoe in August.
That said, I cannot imagine wearing it all the time or just to go to the corner store, but certainly any time I go out for a ride, I think I should invest in some gear. I am 6'4" and 215 pounds, if that makes a difference.
But I need to keep the price down if possible, as I have things like an engagement ring and a wedding to pay for soon.
So, any idears?

RE: Affordable gear?
Well, so far I have a Scorpion EXO 700 helmet, a pair of FirstGear kevlar-armoured gloves and I just picked up a Hein Gericke Urban XL jacket... Something about turtle armor in there... But it seemed a decent jacket and was actually pretty cool in the Atlanta heat this afternoon.
