09 R1 vs 07 1098
Justasquid- the R1 does make more power, the standard 1098 makes 159hp and the R1 has 177hp. The weight is a concern, but every review has said it carries the weight very well and is still very nimble. Personally I like the sound of the engine, and the looks ain't half bad IMO. I've heard the engine is a bit of a let down, but I'll definitely ride the bike before making any decisions!
Bubba- No doubt the 1000rr is a great bike, loved the one I rode, but I want to experience other brands right now
The Ducati 998 was the first year of the testaretta engine I believe, and reliability was pretty terrible on those. The newer 1098/848 and 1198 are much more reliable, and the service intervals are very close to the Jap bikes, unless you frequently track them of course. The 1098 I rode was very nice on the street, city/highway riding. Like any other aggressive sportbike, I'm sure it would leave you sore after long journeys with that leg position.
Thanks guys, love hearing more opinions!

however, if you want to know which one you should go with, read up on some shootouts. the one in sportrider this year said it was two horse race between the honda and the bmw. the yamaha got thrown out almost right away because it was the slowest and the heaviest (that weight will make a difference on the street). every rider was dissapointed with it. the only really positive thing was the sound of it (which is really awesome).
if you're really serious about getting away from honda, id go to a bmw dealer. it won the shootout, just edging out the honda (even though the honda did faster lap times). it has abs and traction control. it has seperate fuel maps. its the most powerful. its also really user friendly. and its not too hard on the eyes either. i know its asymetrical, but it grew on me.
