Ducati 1098 tested
The local Ducati representative arranged a possibility to test the complete Ducati program today. The queue for the new 1098 was long so I warmed up with a 700 CC Ducati Monster. You would not like to have one of these...
My expectation for the 1098 was that that is should provide good torque and power, it is rated at 160 rwhp, but also that the ergo should real bad as on previous Ducatis which I have just be sitting on. I was totally wrong, for a person of my size, 175 cm tall, the Ducati was as comfy as the Blackbird now with raised and reared bars. The ergo on the Ducati was outstanding and the engine performed incredible well in the lightweight and superior handling chassi. It may not fit a large and tall person well though. Even though I have never driven a Duacti sport bike before it was very easy to do long wheelies under full confidence on second gear, and in high speed corners is was very easy to climb out with just the underarm laying on the tank but still with the outer leg fully supported close to the bike. The gas tank is very thin at the knee location, which is good for the body position.
I have no intention to buy a 1098and this was just an opportunity to test one that I took, but the respect for 1098's for sure has climbed to the highest level after this. I tested a Kawasaki ZX10R last year that I reported in an earlier thread. The chassi and the characteristic of the engine is byfar better on the 1098.
In two weeks I’ll go to Nurburg Ring again for a couple of training days on the GSX R1000. The day that bike has to be replaced, a 1098 would be a strong candidate if it was not also a money issue. The Ducati cost almost the double of a Japan sport bike and the maintenance cost is high so they are simply not worth it to me. I want the most bang for the money and is not willing to pay anything for any brand or model yearitself. Thats why I bought a CBR 1000 F and was so happy with it, since it gave so much fun in return for a minor investment.

RE: Ducati 1098 tested
I want one! I love the Ducatis but I realize that it'll be a while before I can ever afford to buy or maintain one. The superbikes are too far out of reach but the air cooled 2 valve bikes aren't too bad, you can actually adjust the valves yourself. The 1000ds engine has about 100hp and I'd love to get a monster s2r1000. I test rode the s2r800 and I loved the way it handled, the added power would make it perfect.
For now I think my new to me 95 CBR1000F will be alright for a while.

Thanks R1000 for your report. It´s alway interesting to read your objective reviews.
If you want a Ducati, do like me. Play "Test Drive Unlimited". It´s the best race game ever.
I won´t beat you for sure in real life R1000, but look for rhino in the game and I´ll race you of all your money :-)
