Renegade RR: yeah you dont need to use the clutch to upshift but you should for downshifting.
Is it a bad idea to not use the clutch to up shift? Can any damage be done to the bike's mechanics/parts? Or could it potentially put the rider at risk?
I'm just wondering this because when you learn to ride a bike through others, they never really tell you to shift up without using the clutch, they always tell you to pull the clutch, release throttle, shift..etc

Clutchless shifting is a more advanced technique than the normal method. Not that it's overly difficult. But more that the rider has to be more in tune with his bike, knowing the engine and being able to feel when its time to shift. Otherwise you're gonna grind gears.
Your shifting will improve with practice. From what you're saying, you're still separating every action. Where everything is a separate, individual action that you kinda check off a list in your mind. As you get more experience, it'll become more of a flow. Every action flowing into the next that you barely think about, if ever.
