Default Hello! I'm new here!

Hi everyone,
Everybody calls me Skip. I am 63 years old and have been riding since I was 16, if you don't count the many miles and years spent on the back of my father's panhead Harley. I have owned about 35 motorcycles over the years, from all of the Japanese makers, a couple of old Triumphs, BMW's and 4 or 5 Harley's. Three months ago I bought a 1991 Honda CBR1000f and love it! I also have a 1986 Harley FXR with a new re-manufactured Evo engine in it. The Harley for me is more of a link to my formative years, and is great for cruising the countryside but the Honda is a machine for actually going somewhere!
I have heard a great deal about the cam chain noise issue on the CBR1000f. Is this merely an issue of annoyance, or can it cause real damage? Mine rattles a bit, (39,000 miles on the odometer). I have been lurking about here for a couple of weeks and have learned a great deal, and hopefully can contribute in a constructive manner.

Welcome to the forum Skip.

All those bikes, and you just now discovered the cane?
The Harley is nice for going to the local hang out, but the Honda is great for going to the not so local one.

Stop by the hurricane section and introduce yourself as well. They're a great bunch of old coots over there, you'll like them (or at least find them amusing).

hey skip, great to have you here, welcome to CBRF! the cane is a great bike, and we're certainly the spot on the web for them. as far as the CCT, it can cause real damage eventually because not having the proper amount of tension on the chain can cause uneven and abnormal wear on the cham, and all 3 cogs. i would never be a bad idea to replace it if you have the time, money, and mechanical knowledge (after 35 bikes and almost 50 years expirience, i'm sure you do). it's fairly cheap, and pretty easy.

pop on over to the hurricane section though and ask people there who have replaced it.

Thanks for the response and I'll get some pics up pretty soon.

Hey ...... so many bikes, so little time! I think I need to settle down and keep one for awhile and I think I have the two keepers, but then again I never had an "R" BMW, only the "K" models!

Hey..... thanks for the advice on the cam chain. I guess I'll have to get on it! I'm retired so I have the time, and can force myself to come up with the money ( I'm cheap ) but I don't have a decent place to work on it, so I'll have to get the local dealer to do it.

Welcome to the CBR Forum Skip,

Good advice above, but the first question I would ask with regard to the CCT is.........does the rattle disappear when the bike is warm? Many of the CBR1KFs have existed for quite a while with CCT rattle that disappears when the motor has warmed up.

You don't need a lot of room or too many specialist tools to do the CCT/chain swap. See Naga_Thais' excellent "How To" on the job.

See you in the Hurricane Saloon

Cheers, SB

Thanks for the advice, and yes it does go away after it warms up. I'll take a look at the video and see whats involved. By the way, I bought this bike at the Used Bike Emporium near Baltimore about three months ago. Last week the fork seals began to weep oil. I called John who owns the Used Bike Emporium, and he replaced the seals at no charge, even though I only had a 30 day warranty on the bike. Great guy.
