Default Greetings from central PA

I just wanted to say 'Hi!' Saturday I entered the sportbike world. I purchased a 2006 CBR1000. It has low miles (under 3000) and it has a few add-on's from the previous owner (exhaust and fender eliminator) but other than that it is mainly stock. I am very intiminated by this bike, but I am looking forward to the steep learning curve. I guess I'm maybe going through a middle-age issue but I am excited about curing this itch. I started riding at the age of 14 on a '73 Honda CB350. From there I up'd the antie and bought a modified '77 Kawasaki KZ900. Then I jumped into the enduro world. From a '85 Honda XL500 to a '90 Honda NX650. And finally I fell off the edge the world, bought a house and have putt'd around on my wife's '85 Suzuki SP250. My kids are growing up and I am finally getting some toys for myself instead of spending all my money on Toys-R-Us crap for them. My oldest son, soon to be 18, is drooling like a Keebler Elf high on chocolate chips over this rocket bike. I am constantly reminding him that this is mine... all mine. I know he can ride it, but I don't think he is smart enough to handle it. From my end, I can control my wrist action, but I need to work on the slow speed cornering. Its unlike any bike I have ever tried to manuver and I want to get more comfortable on it before I attempt to get it in to the mix of traffic or downtown crusing. I am more of a lurker when it comes to any forums because I know most of my questions have already been asked before, but I am grateful for a place to turn to for assistance when it is needed. (by the way, I turned 50 this Spring) Ride on and keep an eye out for the blue hairs... their heads no longer turn on their necks.

Welcome aboard!

Slow speed turns are my Achilles' Heel as well. Gotta remember to counterbalance when turning at slow speed. You've got a pretty good resume. My suggestion would be to look into next year's BRC or ERC from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation if you're still having issues next spring. Think they ended the courses for the year already (tho you might be able to pull a walk in). The ERC is the BRC + more but you get to use your own bike.

Till then, there's always the 'Tennis ***** cut in half in a parking lot for practice' solution. And its a good one. Parking lots tend to be more uniform in their paving. And when empty, lack the distractions of the cages trying to turn inside your turn

Hello & welcome to CBRF!
The CBR1000 is alot of bike, but sounds like you'll be just fine on it.
Compared to the other bike you have ridden, it might feel/steer kinda heavy but you get used to it...takes some time.
Be sure to post some pics when you can

hey there and welcome to CBRF!! :-)

thank you for nice intro and tellling us a bit about yourself ....

slow speed turning is just down to practise, practise, practise with the bike in question as every bike is different ... I have been riding for 17 years and still constantly play with slow speed manouvering ... often shifting the body around on the saddle can help a bit.....

Good luck and take care on it :-)

Jules

Great intro, hardworkin!
I'm in PA, too.... in the south central (almost in MD).

Sounds like you picked a sweet CBR, man. Congrats on the bike.
Slow speed maneuvering is something many people struggle with. Like others said, all you can do is practice. You'll get good.

Looks like you've had quite the lineup of bikes over the years. If you don't mind me asking, what did you think of the '90 Honda NX650? I came very close to buying one (ended up with a KLR instead). Just curious. I always thought they were a cool dual bike.

Anyway, welcome aboard.... and enjoy your new ride (and CBRF).
