RE: Anyone from South Africa?
Hi gerharddvs, just joined the forum about 5mins ago and found your msg in the new members section. I'm also from PTA in South africa. I bought a 05 CBR1000RR about 2 months ago for the bargain price of R98 000, seeing that it was still one of last years models they had in the showroom. Have been reading posts in this forum for about 2 months now and couldn't resist sighning up.
Looked at our local forum on the thinkbike.co.za site, but found it to be on the boring side.
I enjoyed reading the posts on this site and seeing guys (and girls) buying new bikes for $10 000 odd. I especially enjoyed the one where they discussed insurances of about $400 a year (hope i'm getting the figures correct, read it about a month and a half ago). Wonder what i must say about my R500 a month?
Anyway looking forward to chatting with guys from all over and comparing against South Africa.

Yes. South Africa is a beautiful place but bike prices suck! Many companies around here are now starting to import “grey” bikes from countries like Japan or even the US and with import duties and stuff they work out almost 2/3 the price of what dealers are charging around here. Of course all the dealers tell U to stay away from grey bikes cause they have some differences and you can’t get spares. (The only time U can’t get spares from the dealers is if U tell them it’s grey lol) A CBR600 is a CBR600 no matter which side of the world you live Even in the rare cases that you can’t get spares locally the grey importers can order spares directly from Japan.
The dealers in South Africa must catch a wakeup call else they’re gonna lose lots of business.
My CBR600F3 is a grey from Japan and I got it for R16000 (about $2200) OK it’s a project bike but it only needs a headlight and some repairs on the top fairing and I’ll probably re-spray the whole bike. The bike only had 12000km on the clock (7500miles) and except for the damage on the top fairing it’s spotless. Estimate that I’ll spend another R6000. This makes a total price of R22000. Those bikes resell around here for about R35000!(and above)
