Default Amateur hour..

Hi, I’m new to this brilliant forum and will certainly be consulting you folks for everything in future!

I have an absolutely knackered 1996 CBR600F3 which is just trouble at every damn turn. Had it over a year and a half and I should have just looked the other way but I bought it as a learning platform and it has definitely done its job, fixing things on a shoestring budget!

I would just love it to run properly now, it has a horrid flat spot at 6,000 rpm which clears at 7,500 rpm then seems to cough it up and go to Redline. Changed reg/rec and probably needs a new stator, the connector is a bit frazzled but I suspect it really needs a valve adjustment or new piston rings.. compression on cylinder #1 is low.

Great to be here anyway and hopefully I can be of some use as well as a massive headache to those of you with more experience under your hat!

Danny

Welcome to the forum Danny (Halftonmum),

It seems the 'everyday is a school day' is very apt in you circumstances.

There are a number of threads on here relating to valve adjustment so they will be very helpful.

There are also numerous threads and huge amounts of knowledge relating to carb set-up which I suspect you will also become very familiar with as you attempt to get rid of the flat spot

You may well be better off with a second hand engine if you are going to be stripping it down as the cost will probably be more than the second hand one unless of course it is something that you really want to do... or just concentrate on the carbs and valves and see how it goes before deciding.

Good luck for whichever way you decide to go, there will be plenty of help here.

Cheers
Al

Hi and welcome to the forum. What Al said just about sums it up, so I'll leave it at that.

Thankyou for the feedback chaps, much appreciated!

Have done some investigating today and the valves are VERY tight and seems to be some sort of scorching on the cam cover vent to the airbox. The feeler gauges used were tiny, ranging from .006 to .009 across the board.. Just hope it’s not a new engine job.. don’t want to swap my problems for some more.

many thanks!

everyday certainly is a school day! Victory will be very sweet..

(EDIT) The valve clearances are not that bad.. i had the tolerances all wrong. Just cylinder 4 intake is a little tight but the rest are just on the edge of spec.

Around 42,000 but when I bought it the fan was cut off.. a good chance it had been raced and abused if you ask me.

Not too many miles, but if it has been raced then yes could be a little tired
Valves would certainly need doing at that mileage and do seem to tighten up in general so nothing too odd there.
