There's 4 ST1100's for sale on my local Craigslist. I'd like to call on these. Hate to take up a guys time when I have no intention of buying but I'm curious to know if they've experienced it and if it is part of the decision to sell

You could, in the spirit of the greater good that lurks menacingly in the shadows, take all 4 out for a spirited ride.
A sack of potatoes on the pillion and 120mph on the speedo.... sort of Mythbusters a la Forum?

You think if I crash 3 out of the 4, it's true?

Well if that happened, and the potatoes fell off, the chips are down.

I thought the older ST1100's were OK, I thought the problem was limited to the later 1300's.

@ Hawk. You're right on the sway problems being related to the 1300 only and especially the Police models. It seems, through research, that the chronic problems with the 1100 are steering head bearings and corroded swingarms (saw some scary looking pics and vids on that)

In the rainy PNW, corroded swingarms are a distinct possibility

And a distinct lack of power. I rode the 1100 owned by a friend - gave it back after less than 10 miles - dam..d thing was a DOG. Good enough if all you want to do is cruise but those bikes will never be as good as a Hurricane , be it Mk1, 2 or 3. You may as well buy a big BMW with a built-in sound system and hydraulic main stand.......................

Glad it's not me that has to ride them especially every day.

I rode the 1100 and didn't like the subtle shaft jack.

Last week they caught a kid by me, on I-90, going 160 mph on his bike. The report was that he thought he was low on fuel so he pulled over. After being pulled over he told the State Police his bike was capable of 190 MPH.

Jeezzz! I miss those days. I was only going 135 when I got nabed.
