IMO the only way it's appropriate to get really (not f#cking around) cranky with somebody is face to face...Or face to back of head in some of your cases

So, I am out in the desert on my raft having a JD on the rocks and here comes a sheep running by saying, "The trout is coming, the trout is coming!"
