getting ready for summer touring
hi guys
Ive got a 91 1000f and 2x 97 bb's
the f I use mostly for touring
this year will be the alps
last year Norway fjords
it was getting harder and harder to start and lumpy idle
so to correct that
this is what I did
1 get a high power gel battery the f needs every amp it can get to generate a spark when cranking
2 clean out the carbs and send to be ultrasound cleaned
3 fit new idle screw o rings as the old ones had gone hard
4 change cct and send the damper of old one to be hard chromed
5 re set the cam timing as I discovered the ex was 1 tooth too late and the bike was a little slow
the gear scribed line has to be spot on the level of the head casing a tad high and you loose 4 deg of opening
6 reset all the valves clearances , they are tricky to get right
7 balance the carbs using a 4 pot gauge
now starts on the button and idles steady when hot
still I need to start her each 10 days may or the carbs dry out and then its difficult all over again...

Good list, Paul.
Re: carbs drying out.....I lift out the left hand side cover, pull off the vacuum tube from the carbs to the fuel **** at the carb end, and SUCK HARD 10 TIMES on the tube.
Always works.
Cheers,
Dennis

be careful with changing to gel. standard rectifiers were made for lead acid, you would need to change over to a mosfet reg/rec
if you simply change the battery to gel , as a lot of my blackbird friends found out, it leaves you stranded on the side of the road not long after.
dont worry, there may be a few along to tell me im wrong.
just found this on youtube as a pointer, but do your own homework. .. i'm 25+ yrs on spanners, and still learning.

hi Ken G
i saw the vid right through
the guy there is recommending to change to a ricks charger system with 1.5 v lower cut off
the reason for this is he is fitting a lithium based battery to the bike
this doesnt like higher charge voltages
on the other hand i am looking to put in a lead acid based gel battery for better cca and energy retention
so the higher ( standard ) charging voltage is not an issue
