Marine Rifleman is redundant. All Marines are rifleman.

Yeah they really were ahead of their time. designed in the early 50's.

By the time I got to them we were there mainly just to nuke Castro.

LOL, I thought you were asking if the F-18 was replacing the F-111. As far as I know (And there were no F-111's in the Navy/Marines that I know of) The F-111 and F-18 Are in 2 widely different classes that never see the same missions IIRC. Sorry.

I think the F-111 in the Us was all AF and for longer strikes from only land based. I have no clue about the RAAF. Do they even have carriers.

EDIT: I just reread your conversation and now see where I was making a false assumption. I sometimes forget the web is Worldwide.

We have to keep it worldwide to keep it entertaining

The Navy did try out the F-111, but it was too big and certain requirements couldn't be met, or something like that...

BTW, did I mention I love airplanes too?

I live near The Quonset Air Museum - Rhode Island's Home of Avaition History Located at 488 Eccleston Avenue, North Kingstown, RI 02852 and they asked me to restore their Skyhawk. I considered it but the work involved is just mind boggling. They do have a full machine shop though so someday when all my vehicles are working properly (Hah, I'll probably be dead first) then I may take them up on the offer.

That would be pretty cool!
I've been to the National Air & Space museum in DC and the Air Force museum in Dayton. Both very nice. When I lived in California, I hit up every airshow I could. A neighbor was restoring a P-40 in his garage, but they moved to Idaho before he finished it up. Now, they own a museum just outside of Boise I'd like to go to some time. Aviation history is pretty amazing...

You got that right. I would have loved to have a neighbor with a WWII plane in his garage! P-40 was warhawk IIRC (I crashed a buddies 6ft RC warhawk on lejune- w00ps).

I do believe they were friends... That's a pretty close knit group.

I'm thinking road trip to their museum next summer, once my wife is healed up and I buy her a Spyder.

Sounds like a great time, funny thing is I was in Reno (flew to vegas to buy a car and had too much fun at the casino's) for 5 months last year and didn't even know about that museum.
