Default Blackbird motor in a Hurricane 1000, can it be done?

Is there anyway to swap a blackbird 1100cc motor in a Hurricane 1000 frame. Just wonder if anyone has done this. If possible I think it would make the already awesome Hurricane a total brute. My Hurricane runs great at 43k but I was thinking down the road when the motor is worn out. I am a decent fabricator and welder so I would have that part of it in the bag. Things like electrical I would have to farm out. I was thinking a 97 or 98 carbed blackbird motor. I know most would say just go buy a Blackbird. Well I like the Hurricane and 160 hp motor would be killer in a Hurricane!

Let me take a stab at it LOL. This past winter I stuck a 98 1100XX motor in my 94 CBR900RR frame. My 1st dragbike was an 88 1K Hurricane so I'm very familiar with both sides of that coin LOL. I stink at explaining so bear with me if I get offtrack or confuse ya. Only real problem I had with sticking it in RR frame was front motor mounts. At the rear I used XX mounting bolts and the adjuster in right side of frame. With motor pushed all the way to the left, counter sprocket lined up perfectly with rear sprocket. I had to modify upper rear mount on frame (just new hole and longer bolts with spacers, piece of cake). The front mounts on both sides I made out of 1/8th" steel. Right side just required some heating and bending. Left side required some piecing together and welding.
As for electrical, it can't get much easier. Only electrical you'll need off the XX is the R/R and wiring from it to the stator cover. Use your Hurricane harness to tie into oil pressure, neutral, and temp gauge sending unit (another piece of cake). If you're using stock XX carbs, be prepared to do EXTENSIVE mods to XX airbox. That thing is a friggin mile long!! In my RR frame, it ran up to and almost touched my triple tree LOL. I know the Hurricane is longer than the RR but I bet it'll still take some fabbing. It shouldn't be too hard, though. I'd purchase a couple of airboxes off ebay cheap for spares. I was going to cut airbox just after air filter and take some cardboard for a template and just fiberglass the rest to fit my frame. In the end, I went for set of new FCR flatslide carbs (since I dragrace only and don't need filters). If you consider that route, be prepared...they run lil over 1300 bucks new.

I sold my Hurricane back around 2001 or so and I'm having trouble remembering how rear motor mounts are on frame. Could you email me a pic or two? If you're familiar with welding and fabbing, it shouldn't be too hard to do front mounts. If you need pics of anything I can hook you up.

Even Blackbird owners like myself admit the Bird's suspension is far inferior to the rest of the package . . . why go to such trouble just to saddle the engine with more weight, even more primitive suspension, and weaker brakes?

For the money, I'd go with a Wiseco big bore kit, a lightweight aftermarket full exhaust, professional dyno tune, and replace the stock battery with a 1.6 lb Speedcell unit. Between the weight savings and the extra power you'd probably be approaching stock XX performance.

Where are you located? I have an empty block and extra XX head. You HAVE to have that when taking measurements and doing any modding. That XX motor is MONSTROUS! It's roughly 11 lbs heavier than your Hurricane motor (and that's saying something cause Hurricane motor is a pig!). No way would I want to have muscled 185 lb motor around on floor jack while mocking things up.

One more thing. You aren't really going to gain a helluva lot with the stock XX motor performance wise. At the wheel you're looking at about 130hp compared to your 115-120. XX torque is gonna be right at 100 compared to around 70 with your Cane motor. But on the plus side, they don't make squat for aftermarket parts for the Cane while XX parts are pretty abundant. At any rate, if I can help, just let me know...Always willing to help "tinker'ers" like myself LOL

I gotta go with Red Eye as well. I stuck a 1049 kit in my 1000F with mild porting and set of Keihin FCR 39s, I guarantee you it'd eat up stock XX no problem. It dyno'd either 132 or 137, can't remember and have long since lost the dyno sheet. But if you want more power, the XX is the way to go. Can't get any good aftermarket hipo parts for the Cane. Nobody makes cams for them. Only thing you could do is get set of billet rockers made but you really don't wanna know how much that costs.

I saw a blackbird dyno 143 stock. I think there rated at 158-160hp at the crank. Either way the Hurricane would be badass with that kind of power.
Probably to much work in the long run. It would have to be a labor of love and money. Fuel injection is the way to go anyways.

I may buy a Blackbird down the road but now I am trying to get this Hurricane to run like one. I just recently dynoed the cane and only got 83 rwhp out of her. We had to abort at 7k due to a lean condition. At that point she hit 83 rwhp. So i am checking on prices to go through the carbs.

I would think your Hurricane engine needs some work. Mine got 119 out of it.

Not at 7k..
He obviously needs some AF work if he has to abort the run for cutting out.

Nowhere near peak power at 7K revs.
Peak is at 8.5K revs as I recall..........
