Different approach to Sat Nav and 12v outlet mounting
Hi all
I've been picking up free tips from this site since I bought my 1000F a few weeks ago, so I thought I'd share today's work with the group in the hope it will help someone.
I've wanted to mount a cigar lighter outlet and sat nav since getting the bike, but wasn't keen on the idea of cutting holes or otherwise altering the bike in any way which could not be reversed. Sorry for the blurry pics, damn Windows phone!
I liked the USB idea seen on this site, but didn't want to cut any holes in the body at all. So I bought one of these:
Using an adhesive pad, I mounted it to the black plastic box above the ignition barrel. I used a piece of black electrical tape to protect the adhesive pad from getting wet (and to make it look neater). This way it can be removed if I want, without leaving a mess.
I wanted the sat nav mount to be waterproof so I could leave it on the bke all the time. I took a standard car mount (the type with a removable cradle) and pulled the end off. Next, I took a galvanized 'L' bracket for shelving, and bent it over to make a 'U'. One end was mounted to the top bolt of the brake reservoir clamp, the other end was used to bolt the mount to.
Here is the finished article
The benefit of this method, apart from making no permanent changes to the bike, is that both the outlet and the mount move with the handlebars which means no stretching for the charging cable.
It might not look as professional as the more expensive alternatives but it does mean I can leave it out in the rain at work!

When I removed the mount end from the rest of the unit it left the flat piece you see in the pics, and a hollow tube where the original aluminium bar used to go at the rear. The plastic was quite substantial so I cut a thread into it using a standard aluminium bolt and bolted it to an existing hole in the bracket. You can just about see the bolt head in the third picture. I also added a dab of thread sealer to the bolt threads to ensure it doesn't vibrate loose.

I like those afermarket sockets - bought a few myself for my trucks in the past. I like the idea of the bike too.
Ilson - You should be able to pick one up at walmart or autozone..something like that. Should be pretty easy to find. I can't remember if they are fused themselves or not though - so you might want to pick up some inline one too.

Of course not, I got it from a well known auction site and you'll find it under 170478012563. They are not fused so as freakyb said you'd be well advised to add an inline fuse to the wiring.

Looks good, man! Thanks for sharing.
If you don't have a wally world or auto zone where you are, just check the auto parts stores or anywhere that sells boat accessories. Mine was in the boating section. The marine ones are usually waterproof and pretty heavy duty vs. some of the auto ones. I just bought an inline fuse holder for like $3 at the auto parts store.
