Default Alternator chain tensioner

Hi all!

This is my first thread on this page as I'm commiting to the task of replacing the alternator chain tensioner as I can't stand the rattle. I've already replaced the camchain and modified the tensioner but this wasn't the source of the rattle... On another thread I read you can check if it's the alternator chain causing the problem by taking the alternator cover of and see if the shaft can be turned by hand, which it shouldn't if there would be tension on it.

So my question is if it's enough to just replace the tensioner (as I read this often fails) and leave the chain itself alone? This would be a lot less work as the alternator can stay in place as well as the camchain and shafts.

And would it be possible to leave the engine in the bike and just take of the bottom crank case? I know I still would have to remove a lot of parts to get to the three upper bolts which hold the halves together.

Any advice would me much appreciated as I've never undertaken as big of a engine job before

Cheers,

Thomas
