When to replace the clutch?
I would replace the clutch. I use to be able to tell when I couldnt power wheelie anymore. Just make sure you soak your friction plates overnight before putting them in. Also make sure you tighten everything to the correct torque spec. Its a really easy job, and your bike gets some new oil too. Win Win situation.
Not disagreeing about your need for replacement, but a couple of things to do (actually just one, but..) Do an Oil change, make sure the motor is at running temp, check the old oil for any debris which will look likes bits of fibrous material (& old cardboard) suspended in the oil, a sure indicator your clutch is RS.
If no crap in your oil, it may be the old oil was passed it & the new stuff may fix your problem.

if the clutch was just abnormaly hot it could be doing that... try it again. get on the freeway cruise at mif to high rpm and pin it.. if it slips change it if it doesnt dont.. sometimes whne the clutch just gets hot... itll be very soft.
