What stands are you using? Storage mainly.
I'm a complete noob. Been riding for 4 weeks now with a 2000 CBR600F4.
How do rear stands work? What are the various types? Would a motorcycle lift to the same work as two stands if I want to get the tires off the ground for the winter? Does this jack by the oil pan or frame?
Some help would be great. Thanks in advance!

the rear stand lifts the rear of the bike from underneath the swingarm. The front stant lifts the bike from underneath the forks.

Check out T-Rex stand on ebay. They are $105 shipped including both front and rear stands that work with or without spools. You can't go wrong with these. Great stands!!
There are 2 different kinds for the front and 2 for the rear. then based on that there are many different quality level stands.
there are rear stands that work with spools mounted on the swing arm. these are very sturdy. however, F4's don't have spools ( i don't think)
then there are the rear stands that work by a padded bracket that holds the swing arm up. these work fine, but not as sturdy. I have used this type for acoupleyears.
for the front, there are the type that hold the front end up by the fork legs, I dont recommend these becuase they limit you on the maintenance you can perform.
then there are those that hold the front up by the tripple trees. I highly recommend these, because they allow you to still turn the front end, remover forks, front wheel and what have you during maintenance.
there are many different brands.
Pit Bull IMO are the best. I personally have a set of Phillip Lockharts, they are flimsy. they work, but if I had to do over, I would spend a few more bucks on a good quality set.
I have no first hand experence on other brands such as T-rex
