Default What is this?

I want to change out my exhaust, and would like to know what this is. I believe it is a thermometer. It has two cables running into it and it looks like it is got part of it going into the exhaust pipe. How hard is it to get this off, I took the cover off and it seems like you have to take it apart to get at the screws holding it to the pipe. Am I missing something?

Have you downloaded your service manual for the bike? If not, I believe it's posted here in general tech. Look up how to remove your exhaust and it should ID what that is.

Daz da flux compasator! No, actually, I think that is some kind of fancy power valve to get the most power in desired RPMs via the computer brain box. My buddie was explaining it to me the other day for his 929. Sounded to me like something that just over complicates the bike, but not sure if it will run properlly without it.

dude thats the EGCV (exhuast gas control valve) what u see inside of it is the pully connected to the valve inside ur pipe the cables monted on the pully is hooked to a servo motor that operates the valve opening gap according to ur RPM range ( lower RPM the valve is 80% shut the more u go it goes to fully open).
if u gonna install a new exhuast that device go to the trash .. take it off and bend the cables out ur servo motor and pull it out .. ur servo motor for ur model as far as i know is located under ur seat .. bottom line with new exhaust u dont need it its just there for some enviromental protection reason

oh i almost forgot ... when u remove the cables from ur servo motor leave the servo motor there and dont remove it or mess with it or ur MIL function light will come on ..

Same thing if I use a slip on exhaust, get rid of it. Because the slip on goes past that part of the stock pipe? I think?

Here is another picture.
