Default weight limit on bikes

I read in the owner's manual that the max load limit for my 954 is about 353 lbs. The combined weight of my wife and myself exceed that limit by about 40lbs. Can we still ride together? Has anyone else road with such weight. I have only had the bike for a week. I might have to get her a bike also. We want to be able to experience fun road trips together.

I haven't ridden with that much weight but even with a passenger totaling around 300 lbs I feel a lot of stress on the bike but thankfully I don't do it that often. On a trip you'll probably even have luggage weight added so I definitely would consider changing the shock and properly adjusting the suspesion for that much weight ... you may even need to think about getting the forks worked on (not a dyi job).

If you're not sure how-to, this might help:

She has never been on a bike before. Now she is asking me what type of bike she should get. Stay tuned.

get her a bike quick...riding pillion on a blade may just be enough to put her off for life

I bought a bike to bike intercom so she could still nag me whilst out for a ride but this was better than the punches to the kidneys when i was going too fast for her, ....over about 50 LOL

If a bike says its made for a certain weight than it is made for a certain weight. They put it on there so you will know what not to exceed. If you put 500lbs on a bike, I think the back tire would pop with the weight of the bike and the extra 500 lbs.

My wife and I ride my F-2 it bottoms out on certain bumps, maybe i don' have it adjusted for the extra weight, but by myself its fine. kinda hard not to exceed the weight limit by a few pounds, so 393lbs, your wife 130lbs( iam assuming your wife is a petite 130lbs) you 263, you weigh too much thats the problem

Thanks all. Looks like the answer is a bike for her. We are so competitive with each other it's going to be hard to get her on a basic starter bike. She's thinking a 600R. As far as the weight goes. I'm a gym rat and my wife has curves where I like them.
