Well.... some people use "Chain Wax", which is a brand of chain lube.

It's what I use.

i use used chain wax before but it didnt work as well as i wanted it to, it just created a **** load of extra grease and black **** on my rim...
what i used was degreaser and i cleaned it with a cloth really well... then i actually used the multipurpose axle grease (cuz i needed to find a reason to use that BIG *** TUB of it) and i put it on each link. it actually reduced a lot of chain rattle noise so now i hear only my exhaust and no chain rattle

Since people are putting in their $.02 worth, I'll add mine. I've been using the Dupont Teflon Multi-Use Lubricant for about 4 years. I've got 3 CBR's using it with roughly 60K miles between them that we've put on them. My wife's F3 currently has 25K miles on her chain and it looks like new. It got a great review on WebBikeWorld. It's worth a look.

I use a chain wax & there are a lot of different type of lubes that really thicken up after application. Friend of mine used to marine grade grease of his Husqvarna's dirt bikes & swore by it. I have heard of the Dupont wax, but have never seen it.

I pick it up at a local Home Improvement chain called Lowes. I'm not sure where you'd find it "down under", but I suspect in similar locations.
