Default Valve Clearance question

So my bike (2002 F4i) has right at 21k miles on it. I have no record from the previous owner if valves have ever been checked before. The bike runs great from what I can tell. The gasket on the head looks like it hasnt been removed before.

My bike is currently stripped down right now but Im hoping to have it together next weekend. My question is this, I have the tools and know how to check the clearances but if its running fine, think I can get away with it till next winter?

Id rather not get into it because I dont want to have to order new shims and gasket right now. I have a bike show Im supposed to get my bike to and really hoping to have all new fairings on by this weekend.

What are your experiences with valve lash and whats your opinion on my situation?

I know they probably need to be checked just cause of the milage on the bike, but if its running fine, can I wait another riding season? I dont do much hard riding at all. Mainly just take it to shows and cruise occasional twisties.

If it sounds fine it could still have tight valves, and that's the worst situation, you will burn up a valve.
