I would check compression and see were it brings you. Can you hear the fuel pump turn on? Can you smell gas? I would do this first and go from there.

No automatic compression release as far as I know. I've heard of those on 2 strokes or manual start engines, but don't know if that is something that has ever been put on a sportbike.

Do you have any more information? Did you just go to start it one day and it won't start? what is the temp where your at? In cold weather, its easy for these bikes to become flooded, even fuel injected ones.

Whats your oil level at?

Is there a gas smell?

Have you rocked your killswtich back and forth a few times? They can sometimes become stuck.

Other than that, we may need some information on the bikes history, or perhaps any recent modifications you may have done.

With only 5,000 miles on it, its unlikely that there is anything major going on. Of course, without knowing the history of the bike, its hard to say.

am i the only one thinking it's electrical?

turning over (albeit faster), you hear nothing abnormal (mechanically), only 5k miles, a stuck valve should still fire up, you'll just be misfiring on that cyl.

i know the switch seems to cause a lot of guys trouble, i'd start there.
