Question Stator Cover Replacement

Hey guys i have a general question when changing the stator cover on a motorcycle.. When replacing the seal, what do you recommend to put on it? Should i put gasket sealer on it or let the oil seal it? I have a friend that needs to replace his and before i do it i would like the best option so he doesn't have any more problems.

One last questions. What about the Torque on the bolts for the cover? Are they to be specific or is snug good?
