Default Sprocket Recommendation

I was going to change my chain out today, but I found that the previous owner had gone to a 520 +2 rear (I think 0 in the front). I ordered a 525 assumming it was stock. [sm=smiley26.gif] Doh!

Oh well good idea to change the sprockets anyways.

Any recommendations for sprockets? I'll probably keep the +2 rear. My front I believe is an AFAM just like the back (both "Made In France"). It has a "16M" on it. 16 tooth? Wait, why I'm I asking this, I can count....

Also how much perpendicular movement should the chain have on the sprocket? ...grabbing the chain on top of sprocket and moving back and forth perpendicular to the travel of the chain. Just wondering if this movement increases with wear (never tried on a brand new sprocket and chain together).

Ummm...if you have 520 sprockets, you can't use a 525 chain on them, you need a 520 chain. That would eliminate the perpendicular movement that you shouldn't have between the sprocket teeth and chain. So you either need to get another chain, or get new sprockets.

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear. I bought a 525 chain...

I plan to buy 525 sprockets to go with my new chain...

are you asking how much chain slack there should be????? Chain slack should be between 1" to 1.25".

No. Side to side movement where the chain is seated on the sprocket, perpendicular to the way the chain flows when moving.

The tolerance for that would be very little to none. but I have seen a few chains that sit a little wider on sprockets. Pretty sure it was an EK one day I was comparing to a DID both 530, but theEK was wider, even in the roller area, by, I'd say a good 2mm. Also had an aluminum sproket that seemed thinner made by afam...... not sure the manufacts are using the same measuring sticks..

what wouls happen if you had a 520 front sprocket and 525 chain and rear sprocket? does it just cause premature wear? this is all hypothetical...

You wear out the front sprocket and chain about 3x faster than normal, then becuase the chain is wearing faster the rear will also wear out faster as well.

not to mention you'd be at a much greater risk of the chain slipping off the sprocket and tearing up the bike and possibly your foot in the process
