Default spark plug

hey guys,
ok i have a problem with a friends bike, he has a 85 vfr500f and it just died on him the other day while he was riding, so i figured i would help him out and we decided to change the spark plugs, sure enough the old ones were fouled and we threw some new ones in, now i gapped 1 correctly and totally spaced about the other 3 now i know i have rode my 900rr with .28 gapped when its supposed to be .35 just like the vfr, but it still wont start, now i cant find a manual anywhere and he refuses to buy one , so im not asking for a definite answer but maybe someone could lead me in the right direction to check, or in the right direction for a manual download???? thanks in advance guys. And i know this isnt a vfr forum but im a rr guy and thats what i have so im just hoping i can get some direction here .

What exactly is it doing?

Does it turn over? but not fire.. Possible Fuel line/filter/pump blockage Dodgy Sparkies/gap

Does it try and fire? Same as above but not the sparkies

Or do you get nothing a tall when you press the button? Possible Battery/Electrical Fault

I presume its carb based, When where they last checked?

Call a Honda dealer and talk to a service tech. If they know what is good for them they should be kind enough to tell you the proper gap.

I don't want to sound like a jerk but I think your buddy would at least be willing to spend $50 on a shop manual considering how valuable your time is trying to fix it for him.[:@]

like i said, all im askin is if anyone knows what could possibly be wrong. I know the gap i just spaced and didnt set the gap properly but i also did this on my 900 and it ran, so im just makin sure that would not be the problem, cuz im not gonna waste my time and his money if all i need to do is take the plugs back out and gap them. get what im sayin. thanks for the help .

icyhandlz,

I don't think the plug gap is your problem. It should be trying to start if it was just improperly gapped plugs. An engine needs 3 things to make it run. Air, Fuel and Spark. You need to check for those things happening. You can start with the easiest thing first. Check and make sure the plugs are firing. Then make sure it's getting fuel. It could be as easy as a plugged fuel filter, or something in the ignition circuit is defective. You're just going to have to start with the basics, and then go from there with whatever you find isn't working. You just have to know basic trouble shooting. But tell your friend he needs to get you a service manual. You will need one.

Good luck,
Bob

Agreed! Keep it simple, it is always something simple... except on my bike... but yours will be!
