Default Simple MPG/ Jetting question

I used to be active on many of these cbr forums. Havn't been in a long while though. I just sold my vfr 750 and replaced it the next day with a cbr f2. Got 70k on it, but it looks a year old! I'm stoked about the find and the deal I was able to get. But- I was hoping for better fuel efficiancy then I'm getting.

These are the two upgrades that I'm sure cost me more fuel. Stage one jet kit (from honda??), and an "ignition advance". Now this is the part that's new to me. I think it's so that the throttle response is faster. It's also got a full two brothers racing exaust. I'm tryin to just not care, and enjoy what I've got going, but I miss being able to get 55mpg out of the ol 900rr.

Any suggestions? Sell it and buy a 929?

I'm getting 35 mpg when I'm trying to get the best mpg cruising the freeway. Compareable?

attached is a picture of an f2 with like color scheme. Mine has only glossy black from the pink strip/ 600 f2 logo back. tashed that pink strip away with some electrical tape for now. haha

Nice find. I agree that you should be getting better mileage than you are getting. Look over the bike and check for air leaks, bearing resistance, and chain resistance. I would also do a tune up on it and clean or change the air filter, change out the fuel filter, change out the spark plugs. It might not hurt to also look over the carbs, make sure they are clear of debris.

run some carb cleaner...make sure the front wheel spins relativly freely, make sure the rear wheel doesnt have too much resistance..
you should be getting upwards of 50ish i believe

I'll start to go over it and check it out. Most of those are really easy quick checks. If I'm to use a carb cleaner are you talking just the common car gas additives? The guy I bought it from is a airplane machanic that did all the maintanance on the bike. He claims to have always gotten about 40 mpg tops, and says he's gone over everything maintanance wise.

With the ignition advance, jetting, and exaust I should still be able to get 50 ish? I was hoping this ol bike could get me up into 60. Not that it isn't still super fun if it only gets 40. My boy's napping so I'll go check out a couple of those items.

Hey SalemCBR, I'm from there as well!! I use to live in the same zip code... behind good ol Shop Ko on the south end of Lancaster. You are the first one on here where that I have come across. How are things back in Solame? Who do ya ride with... might know them. Solame is a small town. By the way, my bike is bone stock with exception of can and air filter. I've achieved 50+ MPH.

I wouldn't call it solame..... but I still live here.

I know something is a muck here but I can't figure it out yet. Gotta get the wife off my back so I can start tearing it apart. You still anywhere local here? Be nice to find more guys to ride with.

I've ridden with a guy named jeremy, oscar, josh yell, .... I rode with a group a few times here that goes out salem industrial alot. I only got jeremy's name out of that group though. He rides the gsxr 6 that looks like a mini busa.

Any time I rode with those guys i rode a flat black 94 900rr.

My buddies and I for the fun of it use to say Solame. Hhhmmmm, not recognizing the names at the moment. I think some of the guys I use to ride with now ride with a group called 503extreme. I havent been hanging out in Salem because I moved to DC a few years ago, but I still pop into town every once in a while. I rode the ol F3 out here and when I did that, I was getting 55 - 57 MPG when cruising at 70 MPH and no faster. Around town I get probably around 40 or so when I dont have a heavy wrist.
I forgot to mention that weight is another factor that will effect the MPG, I weigh a buck 50 when wet.

I'm 155 lbs. I didn't think about that. But I don't think that's the issue here. I should be up into 50mpg once I get this squared around. I talked to the old owner again today and I guess It's been 4 years on the spark plugs 3 years on a carb cleaning 3 years since the kNN was installed (or cleaned)... no barings were checked. Sounds like it needs a bit more then I thought. Rides great though.

At 155 lbs, you still shouldnt have such poor MPG. Going through the list you gave should up the MPG. If it still doesnt get close to 50, look into syncing the carbs.
Do you have a way to lift the bike up? I check the wheel bearings on my bike by taking the wheel off and spinning the wheel on the axle while I hold it. You can feel and hear a bad bearing(s). You also might want to look over the chain if things like the air filter were neglected like that.
